Qualifications vary by role. Professors (CONUASS 7) require B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. degrees or their equivalents, at least 12 years of teaching and research in recognized tertiary institutions, a track record of published work in reputable journals, and proven capacity for initiating and supervising research. Readers (CONUASS 6) need similar academic qualifications with a minimum of nine years’ relevant experience, while Senior Lecturers (CONUASS 5) require at least six years.
Lecturer I and Senior Librarian positions (CONUASS 4) demand B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. degrees, while Lecturer II and Librarian I roles (CONUASS 3) require similar academic qualifications. Assistant Lecturers and Librarian II (CONUASS 2) must have B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees.

Specialist roles such as Medical Laboratory Scientist (CONHESS 9) and Clinical Instructor (CONHESS 9) require professional degrees and registration with the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria or the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, respectively. Technologists (CONTISS 7) must hold relevant B.Sc. or B.Tech degrees and be registered with bodies such as NISLT or COREN.
For professional disciplines like Engineering, Law, Nursing, Medical Laboratory Science, and Medicine, entry-level experience requirements will be determined based on professional relativity, and applicants must provide proof of registration and practice licenses.
